Winchelsea Moving Pictures is showing the thriller Argo in the New Hall on Monday 18th March at 7 for 7.30 pm. The film is based on a true story of the escape of six Americans during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis. Directed by and starring Ben Affleck who as CIA specialist enters a country gripped by revolutionary fervour, on a mission to return U.S. citizens to safety. Entry cost is £5 p.p. on the door.

A visit by the Mobile Library to Castle Street is arranged for Wednesday 20th March. As usual this will be from 1.40 to 2.10 pm.

There will be a talk arranged by the Rye and District Association of the National Trust on Thursday 21st March at 2.30 pm in Brede Village Hall. The talk is an amusing look at one man’s experience in the British Army, entitled: Little Red Monkey and is presented by Chris Bonsall. Brede Village Hall is located off the A28 between Broad Oak crossroads and the Citroen garage and there is ample parking and good access for disabled people. Entrance fee is just £2 for members and £3 non-members and that includes refreshments after the talk.

Winchelsea Garden Society is holding its Spring Show early next month on Saturday 6th April at 2 pm in the New Hall, entry 50p. There will be displays of spring flowers plus teas, a raffle and plant sales. Members please check your schedule to see what you’d like to enter and don’t forget to give your entry forms to Sally by the deadline.

During Easter there is a special lily fund in memory of a loved one. The minimum contribution is now £3 and a large lily arrangement is assembled on the steps to the altar at St Thomas’s Church. The numbers to contact are 01797 223159/223050 as soon as possible to make your contributions.

After Easter Howard Norton plans to lead a small group to look at Christian fundamentals and what is involved in joining the church. This is an opportunity to bring your questions, objections and doubts for honest discussion without feeling under any obligation. A plan is underway to put together a ‘Winchelsea Cook Book’ as there are so many excellent cooks in the town. This is to raise funds for the Rye and Winchelsea Memorial Hospital. The format would be A5 and spiral bound with dividers to separate the recipes for starters, main and dessert dishes and it is hoped some dishes would be photographed. Resident and organiser Dr John Gil-Rodriguez (01797 229152 or email: [email protected] ) is looking for as many local contributors as possible. Please contact him if you have one or more favourite recipes for inclusion and also any suggestions for sponsors or advertisers. The aim is to have a book ready for publication for the Rye Festival this September, so quite a task to accomplish.

Good news for the Pipewell Gate Appeal. The Mayor’s Charity Concert, A Spring Recital, in the Church last Sunday raised £1,400 for the restoration of this ancient monument which was rebuilt in 1404. Work on the Gate will involve at a minimum, removal of all vegetation, resetting any loose stones and repairs to the mortar.

Winchelsea Beach

Rye Harbour Nature Reserve will be meeting tomorrow (Saturday) in the Community Hall for a Winter Lecture at 7.30 pm. The lecture is: ‘Recollections of a Former Harbourmaster’ and Carl Bagwell will be recalling some of his experiences in the job, with some thoughts on the Harbour of Rye’s commercial future. This event is organised by the Friends, is open to all and donations would be appreciated.

The Mobile Library will be in Sea Road on Wednesday 20th March. This will at the usual time of 11.55 am to 12.30 pm.

The flower arrangements at St Richard’s Church are made by Celia King who is pleased to take on special displays. If you would like her to do an arrangement for any special occasion please let her know and she will be pleased to discuss this and would only ask for a contribution to be made to St Richard’s Flower Fund.
