Winchelsea Literary Society meets this evening (Friday) in the Lower Court Hall for a Dickens Evening at 7 for 7.30 pm. Don’t forget to bring your chosen readings from any of Charles Dickens’ books to share with the group.

There is an opportunity to sign the Diamond Jubilee photograph of the street party which will be presented to the Queen at a later date. The signing is either tomorrow from 10 am to noon in the Court Hall or at the Church Market on Saturday 3rd November.

The Revd Paddy Buxton will be ministering at the 10.30 am Choral Eucharist in St Thomas’ Church this Sunday 21st October. After the service you are most welcome to stay for tea and coffee.

On Saturday 27th October Anne Curry, Professor of Medieval History at Southampton University will be giving a talk on Henry V in the evocative surroundings of St Thomas’ Church at 3 pm. Anne is a specialist in the Hundred Years War and a leading expert on one of our most famous monarchs. The entry cost is £4 for non-members and free for under-16s and the proceeds will go towards Winchelsea Archaeology Society (registered charity 1143524).

The Friends of the Ancient Monuments & Museum have arranged a talk entitled: ‘Lydd Airport’s Planning Application – Conflicts and Consequences’ which will be given by Louise Barton of the Lydd Airport action Group. After the talk tea with cakes and sandwiches will be available. This event will be on Saturday 27th October at 3 pm in the New Hall and tickets are on sale at the door at £5 per person which includes tea and all are invited.

Coming soon to Winchelsea is the multi-instrumentalist Phil Beer who will be giving a solo concert on Sunday 4th November. The time and place is 7 for 7.30 pm in St Thomas’ Church. Phil is part of the legendary duo Show of Hands and he will be bringing his fiddle, guitar, mandolin and ukulele as well as his knowledge of the British folk tradition and great love for Americana. The tickets are £11 per person and are available from Grammar School Records, Rye and the proceeds are in aid of Winchelsea Bonfire Boyes and the Church.

There was much pomp and ceremony in Winchelsea last Saturday week as the Cinque Port Mayors and Sea Cadets led by The Lord Warden Admiral the Lord Boyce processed to St Thomas’ Church. The collection taken at the Speaker’s Day service in the Church amounted to £424.76 which will benefit Rye’s Sea Cadet Corps at the behest of the Mayor Roger Neaves.

An illustrated talk on ‘South Downs Westward from Lewes’ has been arranged by the Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. The talk, by Patrick Coulcher is a continuation from his previous talk on the eastern section of the Downs. This is open to all and you will need to meet at the Community Hall tomorrow for 7.30 pm; also donations would be appreciated in aid of the RHNR.

This Sunday 21st October at St Richard’s Church it is the turn of the Revd Canon Richard Orchard to lead the 9.15 am Parish Eucharist, to which all are invited.
