Winchelsea Streete Game lives up to expectations

A COLD but sunny Boxing Day provided perfect conditions for Winchelsea’s ancient Streete Game. A large crowd gathered to watch three teams battle it out to seize the ‘Frenchman’s Head’ and carry it to the single goal.

As the Game has no rules, tactics were imaginative, with the goal being stolen at one point. This year’s contest was described as “vigorous” and players came from as far away as Australia to take part.

Following last year’s public roww over the score, featured in the letters pages of the Observer, the results of the Game this year were fixed in advance at red 8, blue 6, yellow 6. But for the record, the goals scored were actually blue 5, red 4, yellow 3.
