Winchelsea to hostWaterloo talk andMedieval cellar tour

Winchelsea Archaeological Society has a busy weekend coming up, with a talk on Saturday 25 July and a medieval cellar tour on Sunday 26 July.

The talk on Saturday is on the Battle of Waterloo, of which 2015 is the bicentenary, and will be presented by Rye’s Colonel Anthony Kimber, who has been guiding tours of the battlefield for over a decade and who served in the regiment that served at Waterloo as the 30th Regiment of Foot.

It is hoped to have a large floor plan of the battlefield on which to demonstrate the evolution of the battle. The talk will be held in the Court Hall in Winchelsea at 3pm on Saturday July 25. All are welcome. The talk is free to WAS members and £4 to the public.

The guided tour of the medieval cellars will start, as usual, from Castle Street at 2pm on Sunday 26.

Winchelsea boasts more than 50 medieval cellars, a number rivalled only by Southampton, Bristol and Norwich.

Find out why and how the cellars were built, and learn something of the history of the Ancient Town and Cinque Port of Winchelsea. The cost is £5.
