Don’t forget this morning (Friday) it is the Macmillan Coffee Morning charity event, held in the Lower Court Hall.

Everybody is invited to come along between 10.30 am and 12.30 pm and enjoy the refreshments, along with a great social coffee.

There will be a Church Market tomorrow (Saturday) in St Thomas’ Church at the usual time of 10.30 am to 12 noon. The reason for having two Markets in one month is because of the Speakers Day service on the first Saturday in October. Home-made produce will be on sale as well as coffee, tea and friendly company. There will also be a Horticulture Stall with plants priced from £1.50 and you can buy or swap a plant or donate plants, seeds and pots. To add to the bustle and excitement pianist Iain Kerr will be providing the musical entertainment and all proceeds will go towards church funds

At St Thomas’ Church this Sunday 30th September there will be no 8 am service but the Choral Eucharist will be as usual from 10.30 am. The preacher will be the Revd. Canon Richard Orchard. Following the service coffee and tea will be served and you are more than welcome to stay for a little while.

Winchelsea Moving Pictures Film Night is this Monday 1st October at 7 for 7.30 pm in the New Hall. The film to be shown is Moonrise Kingdom which is a comedy set in the 1960s involving a pair of outcast twelve year olds and stars Bruce Willis and Bill Murray. There are interesting references in the film to the music of Benjamin Britten including the 1957 opera Noye’s Fludde (Noah’s Flood). Entry is £5 per person and there is a bar serving wine and soft drinks.

The Mobile Library will be making its next visit to Castle Street on Wednesday 3rd October at 1.40 to 2.10 pm. It is an opportunity to change books before they’re overdue and find out about community news.

It is the season of harvest and Winchelsea Methodist Chapel will be celebrating with a service of thanksgiving on Saturday October 6th at 11 am. The new circuit Minister, the Rev Ian Pruden will be leading the service and as always a good crowd are invited to come along. Following the service, and after short break to reset the Chapel, all will be able to sit down and enjoy a harvest lunch and fellowship. A bowl for donations will be available to help with the costs and there is no need to book, just come along.

Speakers Day will be celebrated next Saturday 6th October with a Civic Service at 11 am in St Thomas’ Church. Before the service there will be a procession around the town with all 14 Cinque Port Mayors led by the Bands of the local Sea Cadet Units. This will be in the presence of the Lord Warden Admiral the Lord Boyce and civic dignitaries from Kent & Sussex. In keeping with tradition any meetings of the Cinque Ports Mayors are presided over by the Speaker who acts as the principal spokesperson of the Confederation. The speakership rotates amongst the mayors and the office is held by the mayor of the relevant port for one year. For 2012-2013 Winchelsea holds the role of Speaker of the Cinque Ports and Winchelsea Mayor Roger Neaves will be taking up this responsibility in addition to his other mayoral duties.

There are still places available for the Harvest Supper on Saturday 13th October at 7 pm held in St Thomas’ Primary School. If you would like to go the cost is £6 per person and you will need sign up at the back of the church.

Winchelsea Garden Society has organised a visit to both Claremont and Painshill Gardens in Surrey on Tuesday 23rd October. Please meet at the Town Sign where the coach will be leaving at 9 am and returning by 6pm. These are two of the finest landscape gardens in England at which Vanbrugh, Bridgeman, Kent and Capability Brown all worked and the gardens are conveniently close, with the focus being on the neo-classical Palladian tradition in gardening.  The date has been brought forward from the one originally published in the hope of coinciding with the peak of autumn colour.  If the weather is bad, Wisley is close at hand to provide a bolt hole.  In addition both gardens have tea rooms and serve light lunches. The cost is £24 which includes travel and admission to Painshill with a guided tour. Admission to Claremont is free to members of the National Trust; otherwise the cost is £7 payable at the gate. If you would like to purchase tickets they are now on sale at Winchelsea Post Office which is open on mornings only.
