They are the 8 am Holy Eucharist followed by the 10.30 am Parish Eucharist.

Don’t forget the annual Summer Tea at Backfield Place on Wednesday 1st August, from 2 till 5 pm. Throughout the afternoon there will be cakes, tombola, Bring & Buy, books, Bric-a-Brac, Penny Trail, swimming, plenty of fun and much more. All proceeds will go to the local branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The Rye, Winchelsea & District Memorial Hospital is holding its flag day on Saturday 4th August. Volunteer collectors will be in the area, mainly standing around regardless of the weather. If you see them your support is welcomed as every penny goes towards our local community hospital.

Winchelsea Summer Fete is coming soon on Saturday 11th August at 2pm and as usual will be held in the New Hall and Cricket Field. If you would like to donate towards the tombola and Bottle Stall please phone 01797 223458 and for those who are able to help on the day the number to contact is 01797 226642. There will be a Fun Dog show with 7 different classes at £1 per class. Entry forms can be collected from Winchelsea Post Office and handed in at the Fete from 1.30 pm for a 2 pm start.

Several people from the town noticed the two mistakes in last week’s ‘News in Brief’ item on Winchelsea. This item which had been compiled by the Observer appeared to be a typing/printing error. The first mistake was in the advertising of the Methodist Chapel anniversary which was a week out date as the event had already taken place on the previous Sunday. Secondly the erroneous mention of Mayor Robert Beecroft as attending the service. It was over ten years ago when Robert (lately deceased) was the Mayor of Winchelsea. The editor has been informed and I am passing on apologies for any distress this may have caused.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal was recently awarded to Dr Ben Chishick (also Winchelsea Councillor for the Parish) for his voluntary work since 1992. This involved the charity SIMCAS, which organises a fast response service to road accidents and medical emergencies.

Also concerning road accidents, Winchelsea resident Dr Bill Docherty was hit by a vehicle while cycling to work earlier this month. Bill was often to be seen cycling along the country lanes, a route he preferred to the busy A259, on his way to the Conquest Hospital. Unfortunately Bill was badly injured in the accident and taken to intensive care. We do hope that he will steadily improve and pray for his full recovery.
