As it is the first Saturday in the month (tomorrow) there will be a Church Market at St Thomas’s Church from 10.30 am to noon and home-made produce will be on sale in aid of church funds. Also coffee tea and good company will be available while Iain Kerr plays his melodies on the piano. Last month’s Church Market raised the helpful sum of £273 for church funds, so thank you to all who supported the event.

A Cellar Tour in aid of WAS (Winchelsea Archaeological Society) will be held tomorrow at 2 pm, meeting in Castle Street. The tour cost is £5 per person, lasts about 90 minutes and to make a booking ring 01797 225333.

FOAM (Friends of the Ancient Monuments) has two Cellar Tours this weekend on 5th and 6th May. Each begins at 11 am, lasts about 90 minutes and starts from Castle Street. The cost is £5 per person and the proceeds go towards maintaining Winchelsea’s ancient monuments. To reserve your place you will need to book by ringing 01797 229525 or visiting Winchelsea Post Office.

A Quiz Night tomorrow 5th May in support of the Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital, will take place in the New Hall at 6 for 6.30 pm. The cost is £8.50 which includes supper and to book your place please contact 01797 224045 or 223810.

Surviving in Soho in the 1850s is the talk given by Roger McKenna at the Second Wednesday Society’s next meeting. This will be on Wednesday 9th May at 2.30 pm in the New Hall and non-members are welcome at a small cost to attend the event.

Winchelsea Garden Society has arranged a visit to Arundel Castle on Wednesday 16th May. The cost for members is £27 which includes a garden tour and admission to the Castle. Garden Society membership is £3 and tickets for the outing can be purchased from the Post Office.

Rye & Winchelsea Rotary Club would like to invite you to the 14th Annual Walk on Sunday 20th May. Starting between 9 am and 10 am at Phillips & Stubbs Rye, this is a countryside ramble along the River Rother to Iden Lock. From there it is over farmland to Bosney Farm then to Iden and returning to Rye through Bowlers Town and Leasam, with a choice of 3 distances. The Walk is in aid of local charities including St Michael’s Hospice and League of Friends of Rye & Winchelsea Memorial Hospital. Also teams or individuals can retain 50% of what they raise for their own charities. To enter you will need to complete a sponsorship form which you can collect and return to Phillips & Stubbs or register by email to [email protected] . Even if you are unable to walk yourself you might like to consider sponsoring a friend, relative or a local team in order to support your nominated charity.

The Open Gardens in Winchelsea on 14th April raised £2,500 for NGS charities (not £900 as quoted in last week’s Observer, apologies for the error) with about 500 people visiting the seven open gardens.  Teas served in St Thomas’ Church raised a further £900, with £600 going to the church, and £300 to Demelza House Children’s Hospice.  

A date for your diary is Wednesday 18th July when the Olympic Torch will be driven through Winchelsea. It is scheduled to arrive first in Rye at 9.44 am.
