This evening (Friday) the Literary Society is meeting at 7 for 7.30 pm in the Court Hall for a talk on ‘From Book to Film’. The talk will be given by the novelist and radio dramatist Jonathan Smith whose novel, Summer in February is now in its tenth reprint and was shortlisted for the Hawthornden Prize.   In total he has written six novels and Wilfred and Eileen was made into a BBC TV serial.

The annual MSS Cake Break Coffee Morning, in support of the local branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, will be tomorrow (28th April). This is held in the Court Hall from 10 am to noon and Bren Dunk and friends will be helping with the coffees and raffle. Also on sale will be homemade cakes, produce and bric-a-brac.

Winchelsea Singers are presenting the town’s opening Jubilee event tomorrow at 7 pm in St Thomas’s Church. The Diamond Jubilee Concert will include five soloists, the Music Director: Duncan Reid, Piano: Ivora Rees and Organ: Roger Marvin the church organist. There is plenty of room in the church but the pews fill up quickly. Entrance cost is £10 by programme at the door and a bar will be available.

The services at St Thomas’s Church for Sunday 29th April are the Holy Eucharist at 8 am and the Parish Eucharist at 10.30 am.

On Monday 30th April Winchelsea Moving Pictures is showing the film The Help in the New Hall at 7 for 7.30 pm. The Help is set in Jackson Mississippi and stars Emma Stone and Sissy Spacek. It is the story of a young white woman and her relationship with two black maids during the Civil Rights era is the 1960s.

The Mobile Library will be in Castle Street on Wednesday 2nd May at 1.40 to 2.10 pm.

The programme of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee for your diary begins in earnest on Saturday 2nd June with a photographic exhibition of Winchelsea in 1952; also on 2nd June is the Street Party in German Street and everyone in Winchelsea is invited and guests are welcome. The idea is that groups bring their own food, drink, chairs, tables, gazebos, lanterns, barbeques and anything else; then set up on the road which will be closed to traffic and afterwards clear away at the end of the evening.

On Sunday 3rd June there will be a Thanksgiving Eucharist Service at 10.30 am which will be attended by the Mayor and Corporation.

In the next few weeks we will be hearing more about the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and it is interesting to consider how ‘Jubilee’ originated and its relevance today. The year of Jubilee in both the Jewish and Christian traditions occurs every fifty years and is a time of joy, remission of sins and universal pardon. In Leviticus, the third book of the Bible, it is a time when slaves and prisoners would be freed, debts forgiven and God’s mercies would be manifest.

A big thank you to all who helped and supported at last Saturday’s Open Gardens event for the National Gardens Scheme. A total of £900 was raised of which £600 will go to the church and £300 for the Demelza Home for Children charity.
