The Good Friday services in St Thomas’s Church (today) begin at 12 pm with Stations of the Cross to contemplate Jesus’ crucifixion. Then at 2 pm there is the Solemn Liturgy of Our Lord’s Passion.

On Holy Saturday in the Church there is an Ante Communion at 9.30 am and in the evening at 8 pm the Easter Vigil begins.

On Easter Sunday at 6 am the annual Sunrise service will take place on Winchelsea Beach (at the end of Dogs Hill Road) to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection. This will be followed by breakfast at St Richard’s Church and the Parish Eucharist at 9.15 am. Also there will be the 8 am Eucharist and 10.30 am service with Renewal of baptismal Vows, both at St Thomas’s Church.

Cellar Tours this weekend are held on the 7th and 9th April at 2 pm in Castle Street. The cost is £5 per person and to book you should contact the Winchelsea Archaeological Society on 01797 225333.

he Friends of the Ancient Monuments are holding guided tours of the medieval cellars on the 7th, 8th and 14th April at 11 am from Castle Street. Tours last 90 minutes and the cost is £5 each. The number to contact for bookings is 01797 229525.

The annual Mayor Making event held every Easter Monday, since the 13th century, will take place in the Court Hall at 11 am, followed by refreshments in the New Hall. Those attending the event include the present Mayor and Mayoress, the 18 members of the Corporation and Town Clerk, all in ceremonial dress, along with the Freemen of the town. Also present will be the Mayors of the Cinque Ports, Rector Howard Cocks, local residents and dignitaries to welcome in the Mayor of Winchelsea for the next year. Speeches, fabulous hats, photo shots, mayoral robes and chains all unite to make this a colourful part of Winchelsea’s history.

A talk on, Boat Building in Rye, 1851-1951 and other tales by Noel Varley will take place at the next meeting of the Second Wednesday Society. This event will be on Wednesday 11th April at 2.30 pm in the New Hall. Non-members are welcome at a small cost which includes tea.

An open meeting will be held in the New Hall on Saturday 14th April at 11am. The reason for this is to inform everybody of the Jubilee Committee’s plans for the Weekend and to provide details of a year long project depicting events in the Town throughout that time. Winchelsea’s Secret Gardens are open for the National Gardens Scheme charity on Saturday 14th April, from 1 to 5.30 pm. The seven open gardens are Alards, Cleveland House, Five Chimneys, King’s Leap, Periteau House, Rye View and South Mariteau; entrance is £5 per person (children free) and a map will be provided. Charities included in the NGS are Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Help the Hospices. Teas will be available at St Thomas’s Church from 2 till 5 pm and proceeds are in aid of Demelza Hospice Care for Children and Church funds.

The Methodist Chapel will be open to visitors from 2 till 5 pm during the NGS Open Gardens afternoon. Visitors to the Chapel can look forward to a cordial welcome from the Friends and will have the opportunity to find out more about John Wesley’s connection to Winchelsea.

Last Saturday’s Spring Show by the Garden Society was a really good afternoon with entries up from last year. The results of the Show are as follows:  The society’s cup for flowers - John Dunk; The society’s cup for pot plants - John Dunk; The society’s cup for floral art - Celia King; The society’s cup for cookery - Helen Redmond; Overall winner’s salve for flowers, vegetables, pot plants and floral art - John Dunk. Children’s winners: Cress grown in an unusual container - Alexander Redmond; An animal made mainly out of vegetables - Alexander Redmond. Well done to all entrants for such a variety and fine display and congratulations to the winners.
