Winning smiles for two schools

IT'S time to start spending for the winners of the Herald/Lloyds TSB Registrars cash for first schools competition.

The winner, West Park First School, was presented with its cheque for 3,000 by Jon Buss, editor of the Worthing Herald, and David Winton, managing director of Lloyds TSB Registrars, at the school in Marlborough Road on Monday.

The runners-up, The Laurels First School, was also thrilled to receive a cheque for 500. As the smallest school in the competition, Lloyds TSB added an extra 500 prize to mark the huge effort by The Laurels pupils and parents to get to second spot.

Mandy Williams, deputy headteacher at West Park, said they are going to put their 3,000 towards providing a wooden play area and markings in the school's playground.

The Laurels, situated in Winterbourne Way, plans to put its money towards providing a landscaped garden area, complete with outdoor teaching areas.

Judith James, the head teacher, said: "We are thrilled and could not have done it without the support of our parents and the community. It was a fantastic effort."

David Winton, managing director of Lloyds TSB Registrars, said at the presentation: "We have been in Worthing for 40 years and we have a big part to play in the local community. We are delighted to be working with the Worthing Herald to support schools in this way."
