Winter bites hard

Snow fell, temperatures plummetted, rods and pavements became icy.

Main roads were gritted but buses were out of action at key times.

Train services were disrupted.

Officers from the Bexhill - based Road Policing Unit attended dozens of minor accidents on Tuesday and Wednesday, with drivers losing control of their vehicles in the snow.

Worst affected were the residential and rural roads which had not been gritted.

Many people chose not to venture out to the sales because of the cold.
