Wisborough Green celebrates garden success

The Rotary Club of Billingshurst held a Beatrix Potter Garden competition in honour of the famous author’s 150th birthday and, after their judging, awarded the school second place.

Over the last two terms, students, teachers, parents and friends of the school have built an eco greenhouse comprising over 2000 plastic bottles, cleared the garden area of weeds, dug over metres of soil, planted 100s of seeds, put up dozens of garden signs, cut back plants and herbs and created a beautiful vegetable garden with Peter Rabbit’s favourite vegetable – the carrot!

Mrs Saunders, a teacher at the school, was responsible for getting everyone organised.

She said: “It really was an amazing team effort and I can’t thank everyone enough for their involvement and commitment.

“In particular the school would like to thank Covers, Horsham who donated the wood for the greenhouse frame, Billingshurst Rotary Club for donating the seeds for the garden, the Wisborough Green Horticultural Society for donating £100 towards strawberry plants, parents Mr Dale and Mr Ramplin for designing and building the greenhouse, and Henry in Year Four for bringing in the finishing touch of the Mrs Tittlemouse statue.”

Mrs Harrison, the school’s head teacher, said: “In a spectacular example of eco awareness and team effort to create the garden and greenhouse, you could say the second place in the competition was the icing on the cake – or the carrot in the stew!”
