Wivelsfield Historic Society: The Social History of Our Wealden Villages – Speaker: John Kay 17th March 8pm Village Hall. Sussex can be divided between the coast, the Downs and the Weald. The Weald was colonised and then settled later than the other areas. Though it now has some significant towns, early settlement was dispersed in clearings in the forest, some for summer pasture and others for mineral extraction, especially iron working. In Tudor times the Weald became England’s industrial heartland. The large Wealden parishes were always more difficult to manage, with law enforcement ineffective. In this talk John Kay will follow the Weald through the different stages of its development. Many records survive, including most importantly the Wealden landscape itself.
