Woman airlifted to hospital following serious car crash

A BATTLE woman was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a car accident in the town on Wednesday lunchtime (June 26).

The 29-year-old was driving along Netherfield Hill when her blue Fiat Panda was involved in a collision with a silver Hyundai i20 opposite Reeves Wood, just before 11.15am.

Emergency services, including police, paramedics and firefighters from Battle, Bohemia Road station in Hastings and Herstmonceux, raced to the scene.

Battle firefighters spent 20 minutes freeing the woman from the wreckage, using specialist hydraulic cutting equipment and hand powered tools.

Surrey Air Ambulance was called to the scene, landing in a field half a mile from the crash site.

The woman was airlifted to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, suffering from serious leg and chest injuries.

The 40-year-old male driver of the Hyundai sustained serious abdominal injuries in the accident.

He was also taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital by the South East Coast Ambulance Service.

The road was closed to traffic while emergency services worked to clear the scene.

The Highways Authority also attended to clear fuel from the carriageway.

The road finally re-opened to traffic just before 2.30pm.

Sussex Police are appealing for anyone who saw the accident to come forward.
