Woman charged with drink-driving after colliding with horse box

Police were called to the A271, 900 metres west of its junction with Cricketing Lane, at around 3.25pm to reports of a crash.

A red Mini One car, driven by a 30-year-old woman from Lower Dicker and travelling east, was in collision with a grey Land Rover Discovery, driven by a 53-year-old man from Bexhill-on-Sea and towing a horse box, travelling west.

The horse box overturned and struck two other vehicles, a white Citroen DS3, driven by a 59-year-old man from Hailsham, and a white Ford Ecosport, driven by a 51-year-old man from Ringmer.

The Mini driver and a passenger in the Ford, a 54-year-old woman from Ringmer, were treated for minor injuries and shock but did not attend hospital.

No one else, including a 48-year-old woman from Hailsham who was a passenger in the Citroen, was hurt.

Two horses being transported in the horse box broke free and bolted along the road, but were recaptured nearby. They were treated for cuts and grazes by a vet.

The Mini car driver, Jemma Williams, 30, of Court Lodge Close, Lower Dicker, Hailsham, was arrested and later charged with drink-driving. She was released on bail to appear at Hastings Magistrates’ Court on April 20.
