Woman is rescued from sea at Camber

CAMBER Coastal Patrol Officer Rob Cass is being heralded as a hero for the part he played in rescuing an unconscious woman from the sea.

The drama unfolded on Saturday afternoon at around 4pm when four bathers in a group of 26 Pakistani bathers got into difficulties in shallow water off Camber Beach.

The coastal control officer spotted the situation and arrived on the scene where he applied CPR, assisted by several members of the beach team, until paramedics arrived.

The woman, aged 20, was air lifted to Brighton Hospital and was still seriously ill this week. The three other people, who had also ingested water, were taken by road to the Conquest Hospital Hastings. They have now left the hospital.

They were members of a church community from the Norbury area of London who were on a day trip to the beach at Camber.

It is believed they had waded into the water fully clothed and were knocked off balance by a wave.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said that the water was thigh deep.

London Pastor Phil Robinson said: “This was the first time this woman had ever been in the sea. They were not used to it and were wearing clothes.

“I think they waded out too far. One of the group told me that the water was around their waist and then suddenly up to their necks. It could have been a lot worse to be honest.”

A Rother Council spokesman said: “Officers from the coastal control team and police were on the scene within moments to attend to the situation and administer essential first aid to keep the woman alive until the air ambulance arrived.

“Public safety at Camber is dealt with by Sussex Police and Rother District Council under ‘Operation Radcott’.The agencies deal with approximately 15,000 people per day at peak times during the summer months.

“The sea was calm at the time and bathing conditions were deemed safe.”
