Woman rescued from car smash in Newhaven

FIRE fighters helped free a woman from her car after it collided with a traffic island and lamppost this morning (Friday December 31) in Newhaven.

The crash happened in Brighton Road at the junction with Church Hill at around 4.30am.

Paramedics took the woman to Royal Sussex County Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.

Sussex Police said heavy damage was caused to the traffic island, lamppost and barriers.

Brighton Road was closed while emergency services cleared up the debris.

It was reopened at around 6am.
