The victim, in her 80s, is currently being treated at St Richard’s Hospital with what a police officer at the scene said were serious injuries.

Pedestrian Simon Foster said the lorry driver did not seem to see the woman crossing the road in a mobility scooter when he pulled out, just south of the Budgens crossroads.

“It was horrible to see,” he said. “If it wasn’t for the scooter he would have flattened her. The scooter protected her because it was lying on top of her.

“I went up to her and she was lying flat on her face.”

He said someone he knew had been waving frantically at the lorry driver to warn him what he was doing.

“She was waving stop stop stop and he’s not paid attention. He’s hit her, she’s halfway across the road. He’s hit her and she’s been dragged along quite a while. It was awful.”

Mr Foster said first aiders were quickly on hand to help.

“They settled her and kept talking to her and covered her with a blanket.”

Speaking of the driver when he realised what was happening, Mr Foster said: “He stopped, looking a bit stunned. He stayed in for a while and then came out. Obviously he was very shaken.”

He said the lorry was moving off south, towards Hillfield Road and the woman was crossing the street from east to west.

The incident happened around 10.30am today and the street was closed while emergency services helped deal with the incident until just after 12.30pm.

Sussex Police confirmed no one has yet been arrested in connection with the incident.
