Woman sets up camp after eviction

A WOMAN has set up camp with all her possessions and animals around her at the entrance to the Buxted Park Hotel, Buxted, after being evicted from her home.

Mrs Yvette Milazzo, 56, said yesterday after her first night in a makeshift shelter that she had just spent her 'happiest night ever'. She slept on two mattresses propped up on boxes of books and was covered by a mound of duvets.

Her dog Lupino slept with her while four cats slept in her car and her bird Rosie was in a cage at the bottom of her bed.

Mrs Milazzo admitted withholding rent on her home of the last three years and said a hearing at Lewes County Court ruled that under the shorthold tenancy she held the landlord was entitled to give two months notice to quit as had been done.

She said she had been arguing over the amount of rent paid on the lodge, which was owned by the hotel, and had documents showing it described by senior environmental health officer at Wealden Council Rebecca Hele as not meeting 'the current standard of fitness for human habitation'.

Mrs Milazzo said she had no plans to move from her camp. She had struggled through life over the past 10 years with ill health and an ongoing legal battle which has nothing to do with her eviction.

She hoped a stand now would help her with the legal battle, over a former home, which is now in the hands of the Land Registry.

'I would like to appeal for a solicitor to help me and until I get an assurance from the authorities that my case will be given priority I will not be moving on.

'I apologise to Buxted Park Hotel for making my stand here.'

Nobody from the hotel was available for comment before the Express went to press.
