Hundreds of people took a step back in time as they attended a special Vintage Market in Hailsham town centre on Saturday (July 25).
The event, organised by Hailsham Town Council in partnership with Hailsham Forward, saw Vicarage Field and Hailsham High Street filled with market stalls selling a range of food and gifts from local traders, as well as a tea party stand and delicious hog roast.
The day featured live entertainment acts, including musical performances from The Memphis Flyers and Swingtime Sweethearts during the afternoon. The Peter Wilson (Jazz) Quartet was a highlight of the day and proved to be a major attraction for families.
There was also street dancing to keep passers-by entertained, vintage cars on display including a classic Bentley, vintage popcorn machine and Hailsham Festival FM broadcast the event throughout.
Deputy Town Mayor and Chairman of the Town Council’s Communities Committee, Councillor Amanda O’Rawe, who attended the event, said: “The market had a wonderful atmosphere with some amazing stalls selling good quality items. In addition to this, there was some lovely music provided by a variety of music acts appealing to people of all ages.”
Councillor Chriss Triandafyllou, Vice-Chairman of the Communities Committee, said: “Our themed market events held in the town centre this summer have proved to be a massive success so far with hundreds from Hailsham and surrounding areas attending.
“There was a really good atmosphere at the Vintage Market on Saturday and, with great feedback from businesses who took part and shoppers, we’ll definitely be organising more themed markets in future.
“The Town Council and Hailsham Forward are making the final preparations for the upcoming Summer Themed Market and already putting plans together for the Christmas Market.”
The Hailsham Summer Market will take place in the town centre on Saturday, August 29 from 9.30am to 4pm.
The Summer Market will feature stalls selling a wide range of fine food and gifts, and there will also be a hog roast and a stall selling quality wines and beers.
The Hailsham and District Twinning Association will provide an information stall on the day for those who may be interested in its activities and historic Hailsham Parish Church will be open to welcome visitors. Hailsham Festival FM will be broadcasting live and making announcements throughout the day.
Councillor O’Rawe said: “The range of stalls and products offered at the forthcoming summer market is excellent and diverse, with high quality products from local and regional traders.
“I look forward to visiting the market stalls and hope that as many people as possible will come along and take advantage of what they have to offer.”
Councillor Triandafyllou added: “Organising this special summer market has been hard work and time-consuming for all concerned, but the event is guaranteed to bring a summery atmosphere to our town.
“The market is not only an opportunity to discover a wide range of goods for sale but it is also an amazing experience as people can enjoy the bustling atmosphere whether they be families, individual or couples old and young, or those passing through town for lunch.”
The Christmas Market, for which plans are already in the pipeline, will take place in Vicarage Field on Saturday, December 5. More details about this event will be announced in due course.
