Wonderful Worthing Children’s Parade

Each of the 16 schools focused on a different character from the story for their ‘big make’, creating a vibrant tribute through the children’s sculptures.

The parade started in Denton Gardens, then snaked its way along the seafront and back along Montague Street, finishing in Steyne Gardens, where East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton and Worthing mayor Michael Donin were there to welcome the children.

Organiser Caroline Woodward said: “This year’s parade was fabulous. Each school had gone to so much effort and their big makes were tremendous.

“It was a lovely idea to re-tell the story of Alice in Wonderland as it makes for a really cohesive look to the parade and bonds everyone as group as we are all working towards the same theme.”

This year’s parade was one of the largest yet, with hundreds of children involved and thousands of onlookers lining the streets to watch.

Caroline, who is subject leader for art and co-director of the art specialism at Chatsmore Catholic High School, said it was only thanks to grants that the parade could continue.

“We have been lucky this year as we have benefited from a grant and been gifted some money by Tom Wye from the Party on the Prom committee, which unfortunately folded last year,” she explained.

Immediately after the parade, The Smiles Foundation held its annual charity fair, raising money in aid of disadvantaged children in Romania.

Caroline was running the parade for the first time, after Lindy Stannard stood down last year having run it for seven years.

She added: “I was thrilled to see so many people lining the streets to see the children and the school and the reaction from the crowd was superb.

“I would love to see the parade growing from strength to strength each year and welcome schools and community groups new to the parade to take part.
