The Woodland Trust is looking for volunteers to take part in the final week of excavations between September 30 and October 5, as the charity learns more about the history of the ancient woods, which date back hundreds of years.

The dig has already uncovered foundations of Brede High Farm’s farmhouse and outbuildings, the 19th century Austford House and Roman ironworks as well as numerous pieces of 19th and 20th century glass, pottery and building material.

David Bonsall, site manager for the Woodland Trust, said: “Brede High Woods is part of an ancient landscape dating back many hundreds of years and thanks to the £50,000 Heritage Lottery funding package our work to uncover its history is helping us better understand how it has been made use of.

“We’re looking for more volunteers to help complete our excavations, you don’t need any knowledge or technical skills, just enthusiasm to get involved!”
