Word About Town

One of Britain's most prolific writers, Sophie Hannah, will be bringing poetry to Rother schools, libraries and public houses as part of Word About Town, which begins on Sunday November 19th.

At only 34, the Yorkshire based poet's output is phenomenal. Not only has she produced four published books of poetry for adults, recently collected in her Selected Poems by Penguin, and four children's books, but her best-selling crime thriller "Little Face" marks her fifth published novel. She has also found time to turn out a book of short stories, "We All Say What We Want" which will be published early next year.

Despite the success of her novels, Sophie remains best known for her accessible, entertaining and humorous rhyming poetry, which has won her many avid fans. She has also won over the critics. The Daily Telegraph said of her "her range is astonishing, most readers will come away having been changed or delighted" and in June 2004 she was chosen for the Next Generation poetry promotion as one of the best twenty poets to emerge in the last ten years.

Sophie, who is looking forward to spending time in Hastings and Rother at the invitation of Word About Town, Rother District Council, The Arts Council, Hastings Council and The Excellence Cluster says 'I write in order to communicate with and entertain others, to process experience and make something lasting out of it, and in order to exercise some kind of control over life. But mainly I write because I can't imagine not writing - it's the main way in which I express myself and deal with both the good and bad aspects of life.'

Sophie will be visiting Salehurst Primary School and Robertsbridge Community College in Rother and Helenswood School in Hastings. She will give three readings, two of her poetry collections at The Ostrich, Robertsbridge on Monday November 20th at 8pm and The White Rock Hotel, Hastings, on Tuesday November 21st at 8pm (with Canadian accordionist Geoff Berner), and a free reading of her novel and a discussion on writing at Battle Library on Wednesday November 22nd at 2pm.

Sophie is just one of the highlights of Word About Town, which also provides performances from Captain Corelli's Mandolin writer Louis De Bernieres, top children's author Philip Ardagh and Squeeze songwriter Chris Difford amongst many others.
