Developers Bovis Homes began initial work on the site after Wealden District Council granted planning permission for up to 240 houses and a new road system at a planning committee meeting on March 31.

Outline planning permission was granted for the site near Park Road in October 2013 although an earlier plan – also for up to 240 houses – was turned down in August 2015 due to concerns about the building design, flood management and its proximity to an area of ancient woodland.

The proposed development was opposed by Hellingly Parish Council who raised concerns over its impact on several nearby properties as well as a public footpath.

Developers are expected to make a contribution towards a new sports park in the nearby area.

Existing public rights of access will be maintained on the new housing site.
