Work starts on new Worthing breast cancer unit

SITE-clearance work has started on Worthing Hospital’s multi-million pound project to build a new state-of-the-art breast cancer screening clinic.

The centre is being built at the back of the hospital, along Park Avenue, on the site of 16 semi-detached houses which were previously used for staff and office accommodation.

By Tuesday (August 7), more than half of the homes had been levelled, as shown in this photograph taken by Brian Stephens.

NHS West Sussex says the new, expanded service will cater for the thousands more women who will need to be screened as a result of the extension of the age range covered by the national screening programme from 50-70 to 47-73 years.
