The works will include improved ventilation, new furniture, carpets, curtains and a complete update and refresh of the interior space.

Works are scheduled to begin in early October and due to be completed in early November.

A council spokesperson said that while the refurbishment of the main chapel and foyer is underway, Langney Cemetery Chapel will be available for larger services and the Family Chapel will remain in use as usual.

In addition the council is spending £10,000 on digitalising burial records.

The crematorium opened in 1960 and the cemeteries in 1857 and the council hold records for both.
