Work to start on danger crossing

Work started this week to make a busy Felpham crossing safer for pedestrians.

Contractors for West Sussex County Council are improving the Downview Road traffic lights.

Completing the 97,000 scheme is expected to take ten weeks. It follows pressure from residents and parish councillors for improvements at the site.

It is used by children going to Felpham Community College and Downview Primary School as well as villagers.

The improvements will see the phasing of the lights changed to ensure the red lights in the three directions '“ Downview Road, A259 Felpham Way and Felpham Road '“ match each other. This will give pedestrians the chance to cross in safety.

Previously, none of the red lights tied in to leave walkers dodging between the various light changes.

The central islands at the junction will also be enlarged to allow more people to stand there at once.

This will also enable a larger area to be created in which vehicles can wait to turn right across the oncoming traffic. Motorists travelling from the east will also be given a right turn only lane into Downview Road.
