Workmen in fatal crane fall are named

Gary Miles, 37, and Steven Boatman, 45, who were both from Reading in Berkshire, were killed when a 100ft crane collapsed on Friday.

Floral tributes have been left at the school for the two men.

The crane was involved in the building of Highdown Special School on the site of Durrington High School at The Boulevard.

It is believed to have toppled into a second crane, which was finally bought down on Sunday after controlled explosions.

The tragedy happened at 10.20am on Friday and more than a dozen ambulance staff and around 25 firefighters attended the scene.

Both deceased workmen were pronounced dead at the scene and a third was taken to Worthing Hospital with serious head and other injuries.

The tragedy occurred as most workmen on the site were on a break, possibly averting an even greater disaster.

No children have been hurt and were told to remain in their classrooms immediately after the accident.

Inspectors from the Healthy and Safety Executive have been called to the site, which has been closed to allow investigations to begin.
