Worthing beach clean volunteers taste fruits of the sea

BEACH cleaning volunteers were provided with free paella today in Steyne Gardens, Worthing, courtesy of Andy Sparsis, owner of the Fish Factory restaurants in Worthing and Littlehampton.

Andy was supporting the fourth annual Worthing beach clean organised by Barbara Shaw of transition Worthing, as well as the Catchbox initiative, which supports the local fishing industry.

Andy said: “Fishing is one of the oldest industries in the country. It’s important to protect jobs and a way of life. Local people need to understand how important it is to keep the beach clean.”

Anne Weinhold, co-founder of Catchbox Worthing, said: “The scheme operates in a way that we work with local fishermen and provide them with a regular income for an eight week season.

“Whatever they catch we will take. We pay them a flat fee per kilogram and then take the fish to our pick up point at St. Paul’s where our members collect the fish. It’s both social and educational.”
