Worthing Birdman's boost for business

BUSINESSES in Worthing are set for a vital boost from this year's International Birdman contest.

Tens of thousands are expected for the summer spectacular, on Saturday, August 14 and Sunday, August 15, which features competitors from around the world.

One of the stars of the show will be Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards, who is taking part in aid of a children's charity.

But it's the business community which will emerge just as triumphantly, as more than a million pounds of trade is expected to be done during the festivities.

This includes a significant level of money filtering into the town from advanced publicity and television screening rights.

This year's merchandising is already going into top gear as one switched-on company is launching its very own Birdman burger.

The firm behind it, the All Beef Burger Company, is hopeful of cooking up some mouth-watering sales.

There will also be of a number of celebratory items, including commemorative t-shirts available from a stall on the pier across the weekend.

Bringing people

Town centre manager Sharon Clarke explained there was considerable optimism ahead of the festivities.

She said: "From a business point of view, everyone stands to gain from this. We're especially supportive of it as it draws people on to spend the day shopping in the town.

"People come from miles away for it. The competitors come from as far afield as New Zealand to take part. Last year, we made 750,000 in publicity alone.

"We also have CBBC coming down to film over the weekend which will give it appeal to a younger generation as well."
