Worthing boy's chemo-free Christmas

LIFE hasn't treated five-year-old Alfie Huggett too kindly.

But after a gruelling three years of chemotherapy, the youngster can now look forward to Christmas and the new year.

Alfie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) when he was just two years old.

Since then, he has suffered bronchitis, pneumonia and swine flu as a result of the chemotherapy drugs which have caused his immune system to become suppressed.

Little fighter

But Alfie, a year one pupil at Vale First and Middle School in Findon Valley, has finally completed his final course of chemotherapy at Worthing Hospital.

His mum, Caz Hancock, 39, said: "Alfie is a star. He has been through an awful lot in the past three years but he has just got on with it.

"He is a fighter and has coped so well. I'm really proud of my cheeky, bubbly little boy."

Alfie still has to complete his daily dose of liquid medicine, which his mum has been giving him at home.

Back to normal

Caz, of Findon Road, Findon Valley, added: "By December 15, Alfie's treatment will be finished and we can begin to get back to normal.

"We haven't been able to plan anything for a long time, such as holidays, through fear Alfie would get a temperature and have to go back into hospital.

"Now, with Christmas coming up, we can look to the future and keep our fingers crossed he will stay in remission."

Alfie had eight months of intensive chemotherapy when he was first diagnosed, causing his hair to fall out.

After 28 days, he went into remission but had to begin a three-year chemo programme at Worthing Hospital to make sure the leukaemia was completely gone.
