Worthing businesses band together to fight credit crunch

FIGHTING the credit crunch has brought Worthing businesses together as more than 100 people attended a breakfast networking meeting.

Worthing Chamber of Trade and Commerce holds a monthly breakfast discussion meeting which usually attracts between 50 and 90 business people, but the Credit Crunch Breakfast held at The Dome today (Tuesday, January 20) proved a tempting dish.

Chamber spokesman Tina Tilley was surprised so many people braved the cold, wet, dark morning.

She told the Herald: "We had 108 people turn up, with 18 no shows, but when I saw the rain I thought people wouldn't go out if they didn't have to be and we would get about 60 people.

"Those who still turned out were actively involved and most stayed after the 9am finish.

"It sends out a really strong message that businesses in Worthing are not going to stand back but are going to find out what they can and can't do and what opportunities are out there for them."

Expert panel

The panel of experts at the event included litigation and employment law solicitor Elaine Smith, Martin Henley of Effective Marketing Company, Peter Bennett of Bennett Griffin, chartered accountant Alastair Vickers of Ayres Bright Vickers and Phil Gale, senior customer relationship manager with Lloyds TSB's commercial team.

During the question and answer session assurances were given that commercial loans are still available from banks provided businesses meet the necessary criteria, which has not changed.

Mr Henley said that with more than 60 businesses going out of existence daily across the country the trade they left behind were opportunities to be spotted by surviving businesses who stayed on the ball.
