Worthing club fights suspension

A WORTHING nightclub which had its licence suspended following a series of assaults on its premises is set to appeal the decision.

The Pier was ordered to close for three months by Worthing Council's licensing committee after a review meeting in June.

As well as having its licence suspended, conditions were attached to the reopening, such as breathalysing youngsters at under-18 events.

It was the second time The Pier's licence was suspended, following an earlier review in March, which ordered the club to close for two weeks and replace its designated premises supervisor and door staff.

In June, the licensing committee heard evidence from Worthing police that violent assaults and under-age drinking were taking place on the club's premises.

In response, The Pier's lawyers argued the club had been improving and that new measures taken to curb excessive and under-age drinking, as well as violence, were working.

A date for a preliminary meeting is expected to be announced in the next two weeks. A licensing review meeting will follow.

Under the rules of an appeal, any club challenging a decision to have its licence revoked can continue to operate normally until a decision has been made.

The Pier is currently still open.
