Both Worthing College and Northbrook College had secured in principal a total of 80million worth of grants from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) towards ambitious plans to create two "21st century" colleges in the town.

But the LSC announced it will be postponing any final decisions until March.

Despite this, both principals are confident work will start this year.

Peter Corrigan, principal of Worthing College, said: "I am delighted the vision of a new Worthing College has moved a step closer with the next stage of planning permission.

"The new college will offer superb teaching and learning facilities which will benefit young people and the wider community for decades to come.

"Worthing College is on course to become one of the best colleges in the country and these facilities will ensure an outstanding environment for an outstanding college."

Worthing College was given outline planning permission in September last year.

The proposal includes demolishing the existing college and providing a new building of three or four storeys 13,857sq m in size, ancillary building, nursery, sports facilities, including floodlit tennis courts and artificial turf pitch, access and landscaping.
