Two men aged 34 and 63, both from Worthing, were arrested and questioned on suspicion of murder before being released on bail after reports that the 50-year-old had argued with a man in Bedford Row, close to the Vintner’s Parrot pub in Warwick Street, Worthing, on the evening before her body was found.

Officers no longer believe her death was suspicious but are still investigating an assault on the victim on November 18.

The 34-year-old man has now been released from his bail and told he is no longer part of the investigation.

Meanwhile Charles Schofield, 63, of Berkshire Court, The Strand, Worthing, has been charged with assaulting Jacqueline Cowdrey on November 18.

Detective Inspector Gordon Denslow said: “We would still like to speak to people who were in the area around Warwick Street on 18 November who saw Jacqueline arguing with a man.

“Although we are no longer treating her death as suspicious, we are still investigating the assault on her the night before during which she was injured.
