Worthing Environment Agency nerve centre instrumental in handling flooding

When the weather threatens to disrupt the county, a quiet office room in the heart of the Environment Agency’s Worthing office suddenly becomes a bustling nerve centre.

The £20,000 incident room in Chatsworth Road is fully equipped to provide the necessary response in an emergency.

As soon as things take a turn for the worse, the incident room will be staffed around the clock, ready to co-ordinate a response.

The 15-strong team will then moniter the situation and utilise the latest technology, handle calls from the public and guide a team on the ground to deal with the incident.

The team now wants to raise public awareness of how to prepare and protect, should the worst happen.

Nigel Sell, resiliance team leader, said: “We’ve got people on standby 24-7 and if things look like they’re kicking off, we try to give as much notice as possible, through flood warnings.

“But we really want people to prepare in advance.”
