Worthing in bloom

DESPITE the bashing these gardens have taken from the recent bad weather, these pictures still show why the winners of this year's Worthing In Bloom competition deserved their titles.

The Herald-backed competition came to a climax last week when the results were announced.

Newcomers to the competition, Ralph and Anne Marshall from Durrington, won the best domestic small front garden award.

Ralph said: "This is the first year I have entered. My son-in-law entered last year and said I should have a go but I said 'no-one will want to see my garden'.

"He gave me a form this year and I sent it off and didn't think much more about it. I was very surprised.

"I really enjoy my garden and it doesn't seem like hard work."

Aldsworth Court in Aldsworth Avenue, Goring, won best residential road, sponsored by the Herald, for the 5th year.

They have held the title in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002 and now 2003.

Landlady Valerie Davies looks after all the flowers at the Richard Cobden pub, Cobden Road, Worthing, and in the two years she has entered the competition she has won best public house/restaurant twice.

She said: "I spend about nine hours a week working on the flowers but it's worth it. The customers think they are wonderful."
