“For those interested, I went for the first double mega loop ... late flip! I’ll get it one day, thanks for all your kind messages they really keep me going! Xxx”

The 31-year-old was seriously injured during the Red Bull King of the Air Competition in South Africa last Sunday.

He spent a week in a medically induced coma, but was woken up by doctors over the weekend.

Over the past week, his worried mum Sandra had updated her Facebook page several times with information about Lewis’ condition and asking for people’s support.

Yesterday, she shared Lewis’ post and added: “My wonderful miracle”.

According to South African news reports, Lewis was hurt when he attempted a massive kite loop at the start of the second semi-final, but his kite stalled and he slammed into the surf on his back after freefalling 15 to 20 metres.

Footage of the crash his since emerged on YouTube, and can be viewed on the embedded YouTube video.
