Worthing man to row the Atlantic

TWO novice rowers are preparing for the challenge of a lifetime '“ to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic in an attempt to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

James Dennistoun, of Castle Close, Tarring, and his friend, Dean Grimshawe, 30, of Hertfordshire, are preparing to embark on one of the toughest rowing races in the world, The Woodvale Challenge.

In December, they will set sail from the Canary Islands aboard their boat, The Heart of the Warrior, to start the gruelling 3,000 mile journey to Antigua in the Caribbean.

They expect to face 40ft waves, severe exhaustion, whales and sharks during their trip, which will take two months '“ but get their motivation from the fact they aim to raise around 50,000 for St Barnabas House Hospice and Wave 105.

Training hard

Dean said: "James' family have a history of sailing, but we are total novices at rowing.

"We are nervous, but we are looking forward to it as well.

"We are very optimistic we can do it."

Dean and James are busy training in the gym and they have been given advice from two brothers in Worthing who have already done the challenge.

Dean and James are keen to get sponsorship from local business and individuals and are also offering people the chance to have their photograph printed on the side of the boat for 10.
