Worthing one of top resorts, and that’s official

IT’S official – Worthing is ‘bucking the trend’ as one of the country’s top seaside towns, a Government study has confirmed.

Data released by the Office of National Statistics last week ranked the town as one of the least deprived in the UK – beating the likes of Brighton and Blackpool.

Only Poole and Christchurch, in Dorset, and Lytham St Annes, in Lancashire, scored better in the study, which took into account factors such as crime, employment and income.

Worthing mayor Bob Smytherman hailed the results as proof Worthing was no longer conforming to the stereotype as a place people ‘came to die’.

He said: “This is really positive news for Worthing. It is a really nice place to come to live, not to come to die.

“I was looking at the survey, and seeing how a lot of places were deprived, and there was Worthing bucking the trend.”

The survey compared larger seaside towns, with Blackpool recorded as the most deprived, out of 31 towns.

Worthing was 28th least deprived, and the best in Sussex, beating Brighton (14), and Littlehampton (25).
