Worthing pool plan revised

A REVISED, neater seafront façade to Worthing's new £17 million swimming pool and leisure complex will be a feature of a planning application due to be submitted to the borough council by the end of May.

Following the planning process, contractors are expected to start on-site building work in April, 2011, with the complex completed by February, 2013.

Worthing Council leader Paul Yallop said this week: "In these difficult financial times, we have to get maximum value for our 17 million budget.

"The town has waited many years for its new pool and it is now becoming a reality... specifications and costings are also being developed by the design team to ensure the town gets as much as it can for its money."

The new pool complex will include a six-lane, 25-metre competition pool, a combined learner/diving pool with one and three-metre boards, indoor leisure pool with flume, outdoor leisure waters, a health and fitness centre, caf and flexible studio space for other activities.

The site is just west of the existing Aquarena, which will remain open until the new pool is completed.

The new pool's design aims to maximise the site's potential with "ribbons of accommodation flowing from north to south to emphasise the connection between land and sea with an outside terrace opening up the faade to animate the beachfront elevation and enliven this prominent location in line with the council's aspirations for an Active Beach Zone".
