Run in partnership with Active Sussex, the challenge invited all Sussex schools to compete to win sports equipment.

Chesswood Junior School was named overall winner, with Duncton CE Junior School, near Petworth, as runner-up.

Tim Quick, PE teacher at Chesswood, said: “The Striver Challenge has been a great help for engaging pupils, as it’s been focusing on very short activities, keeping the children motivated.

“They enjoy looking at the league tables and seeing how well they were doing against other classes and other schools.”

There were three different challenges – ball swap, football dribble and fly try – designed to improve agility, balance and basic ball skills.

The free competition was devised by Active Sussex and local startup company Striver, as a online resource to encourage competition.

Leon Carter, Active Sussex sports officer, said: “It has been great to see so many schools using Striver as a fun and innovative way to engage all of their pupils in physical activity.

“The range of activities available has enabled the children to not only have fun but also develop vital fundamental movement skills at the same time.”

Duncton teachers said it was usually difficult for them to field teams for competitions because it was a small rural school but this gave them the chance to compete on equal terms.

Deputy head teacher Paul Garnham, the PE lead, said: “It’s a huge achievement to have been competing with other schools that have three classes in just one year group and we are three classes in our whole school.”
