Worthing's worst road?

A BUSY Worthing road has been branded the worst a councillor has seen in 28 years' service to the community.

County councillor and former borough councillor Peter Green contacted the Herald last week because he said he was seriously concerned that the pot holes and uneven surface of Offington Lane, used by hundreds of drivers every day, could cause accidents '“ especially for cyclists and motorcyclists.

"For about 100 yards, it is like running over a race-track," he said.

"It is full of pot holes. The Tarmac has been placed over the top of the existing road and the top surface has been broken up.

"I have never in my 28 years as a councillor seen a road as bad as this. I know, having gone round the ward myself, that people have been complaining about it."

Transport officials at West Sussex County Council said resurfacing work on the road was due to start in the new year.

Nigel Galloway, of the highways and transport department, said: "Works are already planned to improve Offington Lane.

"On January 26, specialist contractors are due to carry out work to stabilise some road slabs and this will be followed in February by re-surfacing work."

He added: "The road does look bad but it is not dangerous and the underlying road structure is not failing. We have also put up 'uneven road surface' signs in advance of the work."
