A man who twice tried to burgle a farmhouse in Polegate and a home in Hailsham has been sent to prison thanks to a neighbour who spotted him in a house across the road.

Glen Lockey, of Wood Crescent, Eastbourne, pleaded guilty to two burglaries and an attempted burglary when he appeared at Hove Crown Court on July 23. The 56-year-old was sentenced to a total of three years imprisonment.

In the Spring of 2013, he entered the kitchen of a farmhouse near Polegate but was disturbed by the owner and fled without taking anything.

In July 2014, he was spotted trying the door handles of a coach house at the same property but couldn’t get in as it was locked and again he fled empty-handed.

Then on 27 April this year, he entered a house in Lower Horsebridge, Hailsham, but a 77-year-old neighbour confronted him and Lockey ran off.

Following police enquiries Lockey was arrested and was picked out by the neighbour on an identification parade.

Detective Constable Sheila Bonell said: “Thanks to the alert neighbour we swiftly identified and traced Lockey who was then picked out on the ID parade, and subsequently pleaded guilty.”

This was Lockey’s third appearance before the courts for burglaries.

Sussex Police have set up Operation Magpie to combat burglaries across the county.
