Yapton faces bill after driver wrecks car park barrier

Residents of Yapton face a bill of hundreds of pounds after a hit-and-run driver damaged part of the village car park.

The careless motorist is believed to have wrecked the height barrier to

the site alongside the King George V playing field.

It is likely to cost Yapton Parish Council some 500 of council taxpayers' money to repair the metal structure.

David Tansley, the council's clerk, appealed for witnesses to come forward.

"The damage was reported by the lady who collects litter for us on Tuesday morning immediately after the May bank holiday, so we assume

the incident must have happened the previous evening.

"The cost of repairing the horizontal bar is quite substantial and we hope someone may have seen something and can let us have some information which we can follow up."

The barrier had a height restriction of 2050mm/6ft 8in to stop large vehicles using the car park.

The height barrier was installed as part of the improvements carried out in 2002 by the parish council to resurface the car park and provide a new children's play area to commemorate the Queen's golden jubilee celebrations.
