People living in the new Fellows Gardens development say within weeks of moving in, leaflets were dropped through their door about plans to build 108 homes on land South of Burndell Road.

They say solicitor’s searches didn’t pick up on the plans, because they were only at pre-planning stage.

Many of the angry people say their view will be ruined, are worried about an increased flood risk, adding they would never have moved in had they known.

“Over 90 per cent of us moved into our new homes in December and then less than a month later we got these leaflets through our door,” said Fellows Gardens resident Rita Leckie.

“We moved to Felpham from South Africa but because of problems on our estate, we had to sell and lost around £30,000. Now it’s happened again.”

Helen Preece said: “They’re already building 45 homes on one side of me, now 108 homes might go the other side, it’s ridiculous.”

Emma Pearcy said: “We back right onto where the new homes would go, our view will go from farmland to blocks of flats.

“We didn’t even get a leaflet, we just stumbled across a sign and were horrified.

“We do feel misled, we moved here because it was a small development, but if the plan goes through we’ll be on the edge of a huge development.

“It’s not just the view, the infrastructure can’t cope. There was only one school within five miles who could take our children so now they go to school two miles away.

“The doctors surgeries are extremely busy as well, and the big worry for us is flooding, because the new homes would be on higher ground than ours.”

A couple who live in Fairholme Drive, on the other border of the new site, also expressed their concerns.

The site is outside of the neighbourhood plan, and Yapton Parish Council is said to be against it.

An outline planning application, submitted in April, is due to be considered by Arun District Council’s development and control committee today, Wednesday, June 15.

Bellway Homes, the developer of Fellows Gardens, said: “At the point of selling our homes at Fellows Gardens, we were unaware of any plans for development of the neighbouring land.”
