The council has applied for planning permission for the scheme as part of a major expansion of the centres throughout the county.

A council spokeswoman said: 'The centre will include a social area with a small cafe, public access internet, training room, one to one meeting rooms and office accommodation.

'Putting the centre in the youth club will mean we are using a county facility to its maximum potential. The youth club's useage is mainly in the evenings, while the children's centre will occupy the facility between 8am and 6pm.

'The centre will have its own catchment area and this covers in the region of 800 children under the age of five. We would expect around 30-35pc of children will use it.'

The Yapton children's centre will complement the existing centre in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton and an additional centre at Laburnum Grove Junior School in Bognor.
