Young chef triumphs

Fourteen year old Shelby Barrett from New Horizons School has triumphed in the first round of a national cooking competition.

Shelby impressed judges with her culinary skills when a group of talented hopefuls, aged between 12 and 16 battled it out at Sussex Coast College on December 3 in a bid to win the Local Final of Futurechef.

Shelby came up with a winning menu of freshly caught pan fried mackerel accompanied by a seasonal vegetable stack of sweet potato and butternut squash, topped with pureed green beans, followed by a desert of light sponge, layered with Chantilly vanilla cream, flavoured with strawberry coulis and a salted caramel sauce.

Judge Jonathan Emson said: “Some fantastic dishes were produced and demonstrated the talent of some very gifted young people. I wish Shelby the best of luck for the regional final.’’

Springboard’s FutureChef is a nationwide culinary initiative which helps young people aged 12-16 cook their way through a series of challenges; it also provides invaluable lessons and insight into the culinary industry.

Winner Shelby said: ‘’It was an amazing experience; having professional judges feedback was invaluable. I cannot wait for the next round.”

Shelby’s teacher commented: “New Horizons School is incredibly proud of the commitment of our students to reach the local final.

“The student’s skills were highly commended by the judges, with the students achieving the amazing results of 1st and 2nd. We are looking forward to supporting Shelby at the acclaimed regional final to be held at Bromley College, February 2nd 2016”.

Springboard’s Programmes Manager Ele Porritt said: “The Springboard FutureChef initiative is the biggest and most successful national school cooking programme. It inspires students to learn to cook and introduces them and their schools to well respected industry chefs.”
