Young Littlehampton sailors fund-raise for club

AN INTREPID band of young sailors raised more than £700 to help save their Littlehampton sail training club.

More than 30 youngsters aged between eight and 18 took part in a sponsored Sailathon off Littlehampton on Sunday, to help raise much-needed funds for the Arun Youth Aqua Centre (AYAC), in Hendon Avenue.

Connie Villa, sailing in the Topper class, was the fastest round the course. Jess Pilkington and Gabriella Holmes dominated the 420 class while Katrina Holmes won the Laser class.

Max Clarke and Ethan Croft were commended for their efforts in drumming up sponsorship money

Club spokeswoman, Katie Holmes, said: “Conditions were fantastic. It was lovely and sunny with a good wind.

“It was a fantastic achievement for them all. All the children were extremely enthusiastic and raced tremendously.”

The money will be used to help support the club’s day-to-day running costs, following funding cuts which have hit AYAC.

Katie, whose daughters sail at the club, said: “We’re in real danger of closing down. We’re looking to do as much fund-raising work as we can. We’re also looking for local businesses to get involved, with sponsorship deals.

“It would be a tragedy if the club closed, not only for the members, but for the local community, too.”

Nick Gibb, MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton and a long time supporter of AYAC, said: “AYAC provides wonderful opportunities for young people to make the most of the sea and learn to sail. I wish them every success with their fund-raising.”
