Young orators from the Angmering School reach debating final

ARTICULATE orators from The Angmering School proved they could argue their point when they became the first team to secure a place at a county-wide debating competition.

The squad comprised of year-10s Arran Collis, Fylnn Hickey, Liam Gilbeg, Charlie Batchelor, Naomi Gittus and Emmie Jonston had to discuss their way to victory over three topics.

From deliberating the pros and cons of gay marriage and the possible impact a wide-spread roll-out of renewable energy power plants in the country to discussing whether or not American culture was damaging British tradition – the prospective politicians certainly faced stiff opposition against their counterparts from Worthing’s Davison High School.

The competition was hosted at County Hall, in Chichester, on Friday (March 1). The team from Angmering have now booked their place to compete at the final against either the Bishop Luffa School, Chichester, or Worthing’s Chatsmore Catholic High School during the tournament’s final, on Tuesday, April 16.

English subject leader and coach for Angmering’s various debating squads, Jo Sykes, said the year-10s have now started their preparations for the event, with their year-seven counterparts grilling them during practice sessions.
